Good day my fellow fantasy football managers. I just wanted to post an article discussing the new kickoff rules. It will have a non-zero effect on Fantasy Football so I wanted to talk about it and perhaps get some opinions from you all.

As the 2024 NFL season gets underway, one of the most anticipated changes is the modification to kickoff rules designed to increase return rates. This will definitely enhance the thrill of actually watching the game and reintroduce an element of excitement during kickoffs that has steadily declined over the years with most teams just opting to kick it out the back of the end-zone. Here’s how the new rules will change that crap.

First, kickoff returns have long been one of the most electrifying aspects of football. The potential for a returner to slip and slide around tackles and score a touchdown adds a dynamic element to the game that can provide a surprise lead change, or give the losing team a shot at a big comeback. By increasing kickoff return rates, fans can expect more of these thrilling moments where a single play can turn the tide of a game. Almost every return will provide an opportunity for a huge momentum shift.

We will also see more drama and athleticism during kickoffs. Special teams is the home to...well... 'specialized' players and, in a lot cases, this is the only time some of those players see the field. Expect to see tons of amazing blocking as well as some shenanigans from the returners now that they will actually be a much larger portion of overall team strategy. Kickoffs used to be when everyone went to refill their beers (at exorbitant coliseum prices) this new paradigm will inevitably get hometown crowds on the edge of their seats during kickoff as big plays will be more commonplace. The changes are definitely a huge advantage for the home team since big "stops" on the kick off will not be nearly as energizing as a huge kick off return.

An aspect of the rule change that I'm really going to appreciate is the added level of scheming this will require from coaching staffs. This strategic depth adds another layer of intrigue to the game, as fans watch to see how teams respond to the challenges posed by increased return opportunities. Particularly in this first year, coaches that are able to scheme brilliant coverage and return schemes will have a decided advantage over those coaches that fail to address the impacts of the new rules on the overall strategy of the game.

Finally, it's just fun for everyone. The 'offensive and defensive lines' for the kickoff will provide plenty of highlight reel blocks and slips and begin to give the 'big guys' their moment in the sun. The returners will perhaps return to roles of prominence in not only fandom, but as a valued members of the team. Those performing at the highest level will be a highly sought asset, and managers will have to balance that against acquiring and paying the more traditional skill positions.

Conclusion:

The increase in kickoff return rates for the 2024 NFL season promises to bring a new level of excitement to the game. By reviving the thrill of big plays, adding unpredictability, showcasing player skills, energizing the crowd, deepening strategic elements, and revitalizing special teams, these changes will ensure that kickoffs are no longer just an extended window to hit the bathrooms before real football resumes.
